Good morning folks,
Today I want to talk about Methotrexate. It's medicament in our country which you have to use for some time before you can use "Biological" drugs....
Let's see what Drugs.Com speaks about it :
"Methotrexate interferes with the growth of certain cells of the body, especially cells that reproduce quickly, such as cancer cells, bone marrow cells, and skin cells.
Methotrexate is used to treat certain types of cancer of the breast, skin, head and neck, or lung. It is also used to treat severe psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis.........."
Bla, bla bla bla.... CANCER ? wtf. we have only little skin disease, why we have to use so strong drug ? That's not the worst part. I tried to find good list of side-effects online, but i see that it's not very easy, i found one list that i liked on Medline Plus page :
Methotrexate may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
- dizziness
- drowsiness
- headache
- swollen, tender gums
- decreased appetite
- reddened eyes
- hair loss
Some side effects can be serious. If you experience any of these symptoms or those listed in the IMPORTANT WARNING section, call your doctor immediately:
- blurred vision or sudden loss of vision
- seizures
- confusion
- weakness or difficulty moving one or both sides of the body
- loss of consciousness
One guy speaks on patients forum about his fathers fatal death :
"Dear Methotrexate Gang,
Hi - I'm writing this post because my father has passed away from methotrexate toxicity in February. This cause of death has been officially confirmed. I'm in a state of shock and I really don't believe that the general public understand the severity or danger of this drug.
As I've read here many MTX patients have been on this drug for months if not years. My Dad was on this drug for only five days.
Here is some advice for everyone on this drug:
Please everyone always ask for a consumer information pamphlet and be aware of the side effects.
Even if you feel fine don't ignore any side effects
Hospitals don't check for MTX levels in the blood - if you find yourself in Hospital ask them to test the levels.
Be aware of leucovorin therapy ; known as 'rescue therapy' (this is administered if you have suspected MXT poisoning)
Always follow the directions from a rhumatoid arthritist specialist or dermatologist or oncologist - not a general practitioner."
So it's your decision to try it or not... My decision was not to try this fatal drug as psoriasis is not so bad at all, i do not want to live without hair, or be sick everyday.
For this time there's a lot of other biological treatments like Stelara, Simponi, Humira, Costenyx and newest one Taltz... i will speak about them later today, or maybe tomorrow.
So love yourself, psoriasis is not bad at all, you can live with it, it's better than death :)
Thank you for reading friends!
